That 2% of Senegal’s GDP comes from ICS highlights the company’s eminence in Industrial
Chemicals.
ICS is a public limited company in Senegal with assets valued over $500 Million.
It has a phosphate mine of 2 million Tons Per Annum (MTPA) capacity, and a Phosphoric acid
plant with a capacity to produce 660‚000 MTPA. It produces rock phosphate from its own mines.
Remarkable Chemistry leads to Long-standing Collaboration
Archean Group with its farsighted and focused vision has rocked the global phosphate market by acquiring majority stake in the world’s 4th largest phosphoric acid producer, ICS located in Senegal in West Africa. The Indian Consortium comprising of Archean Group, IFFCO and Government of India have taken a majority stake of 85% in ICS.
Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) is the largest manufacturer and distributor of chemical fertilizers in India and one of the dominant players in global fertilizer industry. IFFCO was established at the initiative of Indian farmers in 1967 as a Multi-state Cooperative Society. It has now around 40,000 Cooperative societies spread across India as its shareholders.
A concentre 25 year buy-back contract has been formulated between ICS and IFFCO, where 85% of the production will be delivered to IFFCO while the remaining 15% will be catering to the neighbouring West African countries.
ICS contributes 2% of the national GDP for the Government of Senegal.
ICS exports the major portion of the phosphoric acid and produces fertilisers with the balance acid. In a normal business year, sales of phosphoric acid to India represent about 85% of the total sales of ICS, and the remaining 15% comes from sales of fertilizers and pesticide products in Senegal and in the nearby African countries.
The majority ownership of ICS is by an Indian Consortium (85%) followed by the Government of Senegal (15%).

- A mine site located at Taîba, approximately one hundred km from Dakar, which extracts and processes phosphate with a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum.
- Two phosphoric acid production units with a total capacity of 660,000 tonnes/annum and two sulphuric acid production units with a total capacity of 2 million tonnes/ annum. These units known as Darou 1 & Darou 2 are located at Darou near Mboro, approximately one hundred km from Dakar.
- A DAP and NPK fertilizer production plant with a capacity of approximately 250,000 tonnes/annum located at Mbao, 18 km from Dakar, on the site of the group headquarters; there fertiliser plant also has the auxiliary facilities such as phosphoric acid and ammonia storages, raw material and product storage silos, bagging facilities and truck and rail-car loading facilities, plants for utilities such as water, power and steam.
- The SEFICS railway operation company, which has its own fleet of locomotives and wagons and tankers; with a capacity of 250,000 tonnes/annum.
- SENCHIM, a company that markets fertilizers and plant health products, located 13 km from Dakar.
- Port terminals at the Dakar port comprising handling and storage facilities for sulphur delivery and shipping out of phosphate and fertilizers.
